I was in Seattle yesterday on a family vacation, and there was a lesbian couple behind me in line for the Space Needle. When our party’s elevator reached the top and the doors opened, there were two little boys holding a beautiful pink and white cake. One of the women behind me stepped forward, took a ring box off the top of the cake, got down on one knee, and proposed to the other with a gorgeous ring. She accepted with ecstatic tears, and their families came forward through the crowd with video cameras and huge smiles.

I have never questioned my view on same-sex marriage, but if I ever had, this sight would have destroyed any doubts.

I have never seen two people look more in love in my entire life. When their little family got down and hugged each other, I don’t think any force in the world could have prevented my tears.

Marriage is not about religion. Marriage is about love. If these two women love one another, they deserve the same benefits as any other couple. Their family is hardly different than any other, so there is no reason for different treatment. Their marriage will not hurt them, their children, or society. It does not get any simpler.

I can’t wait until all couples in our nation are allowed equal marriage rights. I don’t doubt that it will be soon.

Change is coming.
